Riau
Riau is a province located on the central eastern coast of Sumatra, with Pekanbaru as its capital. Known for its abundant natural resources, Riau is home to a diverse population, with Malay as the dominant ethnic group alongside Minangkabau, Batak, Javanese, and Chinese communities. Its economy is driven by oil and gas, plantations, forestry, and processing industries, making it one of Indonesia's largest producers of petroleum, palm oil, and rubber. Strategically positioned along the Strait of Malacca, Riau plays an important role in both national and regional trade. Culturally, Riau is recognized as a strong center of Malay heritage, where traditional arts, literature, and music—such as zapin and makyong—continue to thrive. Historically, the region is closely tied to the powerful Siak Sri Indrapura Sultanate, one of the most influential Malay Islamic kingdoms of its era. Today, Riau is known for its harmonious blend of cultural richness, natural beauty, and economic significance, featuring landmarks like Siak Palace, Muara Takus Temple, Tesso Nilo National Park, and various coastal destinations.
